UNB, New York :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for promoting South-South and triangular cooperation to ensure shared prosperity, sustainable development and a life of dignity for all.
“Let’s commit ourselves to promote South-South and triangular cooperation to ensure shared prosperity, sustainable development and a life of dignity for all,” she said.
The Prime Minister was delivering her statement at the High-Level Roundtable on South-South Cooperation held at the conference room of the UN Headquarters here on Saturday.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon co-chaired the roundtable attended by heads of state and government of 18 countries, including Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Pakistan and South Africa. The leaders of these countries took part in the roundtable.
Emphasising that South-South cooperation can also foster durable peace and security, she said, “Indeed, the volatile global security situation, particularly violent extremism, continue to pose significant challenge to sustainable development in the South,” Sheikh Hasina, however, said the range and quantum
of South-South cooperation have expanded in the last decade or so. “But, it is also a reality that South-South Cooperation cannot substitute North-South Cooperation.”
She said the concept of South-South cooperation is premised on solidarity and compassion. “Our countries may differ in size, strength or level of development, but we generally share similar development visions. We can thus exchange, disseminate and scale up successful development solutions with one another,” With this in mind, she said, Bangladesh hosted a High-level Meeting on South-South Cooperation and Development in Dhaka earlier this year. The meeting focused on financing South-South initiatives and technology transfer within the South.
“We’re indeed moving in the right direction. New patterns of trade, investment and other economic activities have emerged among countries of the South,” she said.
The Prime Minister said the establishment of the BRICS Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is a positive development in this respect. “With progress in science, technology and innovation in the South, new dynamics of South-South cooperation have evolved.”
