UNB, Dhaka :
The BNP-led 20-party alliance on Tuesday warned that people will be forced to take the path of realising their rights if the government and the Election Commission fail to play their due role in the upcoming elections to three city corporations.
In a statement, signed by BNP joint secretary general Barkatullah Bulu, it said, “The 20-party and the country’s people hope that the government will try to make the three city corporations’ polls smooth free, fair and acceptable while the Election Commission will play its due and impartial role in reviving a democratic process in the country.”
Or else, the 20-party said, “The nation will be compelled to find out the way to realise its rights.”
It alleged that people are passing their days with serious concern about the country’s future due to the government’s stubbornness and Baksal (one-party) policy. “The deaf attitude of the government has also been pushing the country into a deep crisis further.”
The BNP-led alliance accused the government of illegally installing its puppet representatives in the local bodies removing the opposition-backed elected representatives after implicating them in ‘false and fabricated’ cases.
The 20-party alleged that the opposition-backed elected public representatives are either suffering imprisonment in ‘false cases’ or on the run to save their lives. “On the other hand, those who have become representatives through vote-less farcical polls are showing arrogance in parliament. This is nothing, but a brutal mockery with democracy.”
