UNB, Dhaka :
Bangladesh can become a middle-income economy by 2019-20, two years before the target should the economy keeps up its current resilience, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said on Thursday.
Kamal was addressing a review of the implementation of 6th five-year plan and formulation of the 7th five-year plan at the NEC
conference room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The minister asked relevant officials and experts to help the country’ s future planning process. He said the implementation would be hard if planning is not done properly. Kamal said turning Bangladesh into a middle income country by 2021 and a developed one by 2041 is a key objective of the government. Planning should be done keeping people’s interest high.
“It is our people who are at the centre of all of our planning process. We would engage both former and current officials in formulating future planning,” he added.
The Planning Minister said that the country’s economic achievement in the last five years is quite remarkable considering the global recession. He referred to achievements in economic growth, poverty reduction, disaster management and in women empowerment.
He said that as the economic recession in Europe and America is over, there would be a global economic boom in the next five years. “So, the next five years would be a hard time for us and we have to overcome it through relentless work,” the Minister added. General Economics Division Member of the Planning Commission Dr. Shamsul Alam gave a presentation on the progress of 6th five-year plan.
