Plan to establish livestock laboratory

Aiming to control the quality and standard of foods, food ingredients and medicines of livestock, the government has launched a project to establish laboratory for a sustainable livestock sector.
The laboratory would also examine the imported medicine, hormone and steroid being used in livestock to prevent any type of diseases.
“Bangladesh has attained self-sufficiency in livestock and egg production, and in some extend it has surplus production, but we’ve to make it sustainable,” said Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal.
He said the laboratory would work to prevent different type of diseases, transmitted to the livestock by imported foods and its ingredients as well as medicine, through ensuring quality and standard.
The minister, however, laid emphasis on boosting milk production as the country has deficit in this sector.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved “the establishment of laboratory for controlling the standard of livestock production ingredients and livestock foods” involving Taka 66.13 crore.
Department of Livestock is entrusted to implement the project by June, 2021.
Officials of planning commission said nearly 70 per cent of the total expenditure of livestock sector is involved with food ingredients. Production of meat, egg and milk would be boosted through ensuring quality and standards of food ingredients.
They said new types of diseases, germs, chemical and bio-chemical substances would enter and spread into the country with the imported foods, food ingredients and medicines. In addition, different types of breeding elements could also transmit disease, but those would be prevented by quality control.
