Bandarban Correspondent :
A number of youths have a developed pigeon projects to meet the ever-increasing market demand of this species in Bandarbon.
At present, there are more than 12 pigeon projects in the Sadar upazila of the district.
In the district, pigeon rearing is no longer a sweet habit of days long gone by; rather it has turned into a new business venture. Once the rearing of this dear bird was a regular habitual feature of many families, but it has lost ways due to commercial enthusiasm, many traditional people of the locality expressed with a frustrating voice.
Nadiml, 26, a garment businessman residing in Bandarban Bazaar area under Sadar upazila, used to rear local variety of pigeons in open sky on the roof of his house since his boyhood. Now he has modernised his venture by way of making iron case for nurturing special variety of ‘Seraji pigeon’. This enthusiastic person has transformed the pigeon project following foreign technology and collected varied classes of this bird from across the country. Within a year, the project has been further developed in the process of multiplication of eggs and germination. Now it abounds in 40 categories of rare pigeons covering African coterbol, Pakistani Seraji, Humer, Resar, Giribaj, Jekobin, and most costly Mukki variety. This business entrepreneur earns on an average Tk 30,000 to Tk 40,000 per month.
While talking with this correspondent, Nadim informed, he started with only two pairs of pigeon, and his farm presently contains pigeons valuing few lakh taka.
Like Nadim, Faisal, Mithun,Uma, Mong Marma, Mishu, Sohel and few others of the locality have been earning profits through this new venture. Pigeon-lover entrepreneur Mushiur Rahman Mithun said the youths, instead of being engaged in face book, can be associated with this venture to ensure financial gain.
But the district Animal Husbandry Department has hardly been succeeded in curing the diseases, farm owners have raised complaints to this correspondent; they said, in many cases, they have to buy medicines from Chittagong.
While answering to the complaints lodged by the farmers, Momataj Jahan, a doctor of the department, talked about the limitations of the department, adding that appropriate medicines of different rare varieties of pigeon are also not available in the country.
