The land alloted for Bangladesh College of Physiotherapy has long been occupied by influential persons to use it as a slum of drug peddlers.
“It is very important to open a physiotherapy college soon. We have contacted every tier in the government to construct the college building urgently. Lastly we met President Abdul Hamid in this regard. The President directed the Health Ministry after getting our applications to take step to construct a college building on its land as per rules. But there is no sign yet to start any construction work,” said Dalilur Rahman, President of Bangladesh Physiotherapy Association (BPA).
Sources said Health Ministry allotted five and a quarter acres of land in Mohakhali in the capital city to construct the Bangladesh College of Physiotherapy in 2008.
The foundation stone was unveiled and a boundary wall constructed in 2010. But the construction work has not started yet.
The stipulated place of the college is situated near the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) office beside the Infectious Diseases Hospitals in Mohakhali.
The land has now turned into a slum, rickshaw garage and a hub of drug peddlers.
Some Humayun Kabir from the slum in the land or filed a writ petition to the High Court to get
right to live there, which was rejected by the court through a verdict in 2013 saying that the applicant has no right to live in the land. The court also directed the applicant and others in the slum to leave the land of the college within two months. It also directed the authority to construct the college soon.
“The directives of the High Court has also not been realised yet,” said Dalilur Rahman.
In this situation, the graduate level students of physiotherapy are suffering because of the absence of an independent college building. They are compelled to use classes in Orthopedic Hospital and other medical institutes and hospitals.
“Even we have met with our President Abdul Hamid. We requested him to take necessary steps after describing the importance of such a institution. The President assured us of taking necessary initiatives through the proper authority,” said a student preferring anonymity.
Meanwhile, physiotherapists sought the Prime Minister’s intervention to start the construction work of the college.
According to experts, there are more than 10 percent of the population are suffering from different physical problems like paralysis, back pain, waist pain, arthritis and many more who need physiotherapy, as it is the main treatment for those types of physical problems.
Apart from these, many people are being victimized of disabilities every day in different accidents.
Physiotherapy is the most reliable treatment for those victims.
“Without setting up a complete institution, learning facilities of physiotherapy could not be achieved. So it is very urgent to establish the college as soon as possible,” said Dalilur Rahman.
When contacted, the officials from DGHS and the Health and Family Welfare Ministry said the ministry is taking initiatives as early as possible to the construction work.
However, they could not say when it would start.
