The District and Sessions’ Judge’s Court of Dhaka yesterday (Monday) awarded life term imprisonment to a physician and his girl friend for killing his wife in 2008.
Judge Md Abdul Mazid of the court pronounced the verdict on Monday afternoon in his crowded courtroom in presence of the convicts.
The court also fined convicts, Dhaka Orthopedic Hospital Associate Professor Dr Tozammel Hossain and his girl friend Shamsunnahar aliasNargis, Tk 10,000 each. In default, the convicts will suffer one year more in prison.
The court in its order also said the accused deserved death penalty for the heinous crime. But they were given life term considering their ages.
On July 6, 2008, Dr Tozammel hacked his wife Fahmida Aktar Nazma to death at their Mirpur residence following a brawl over his extra-marital affairs with Nargis.
Victim’s brother Mehedi Hasan filed a murder case with Mirpur Police Station against Tozammel and Nargis the following day. The court recorded the depositions of 18 witnesses to give the verdict.
The case record says that victim Nazma was married by Dr Tozammel in 1966. After a few days, Nazma smelled the extra marital relation between her husband and Nargis. Tozammel used to torture Nazma physically and mentally as she opposed his illicit relation with Nargis.
The victim herself lodged a General Diary with Mirpur Police about the illicit connection of her husband with Nargis. Later, examining the mobile phone of the victim, police arrested Nargis and she made confessional statement to a court admitting her offence in the murder Under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. She told the court that she had illicit and unethical relation with Tozammel and they killed Nazma in collision with each other.
Dhaka District’s Public Prosecutor Khandaker Abdul Mannan conducted the case on behalf of the prosecution.
