Physically challenged people need support for rehab

Depicting their living and livelihood related vulnerabilities speakers in a consultation meeting here yesterday observed that there should be adequate measures and interventions for rehabilitation of the physically challenged people to free them from their plights.
They mentioned that the people with disabilities caused by spinal cord
injuries are subjected to repression and negligence from their families alongside society. So, they need community support for their proper rehabilitation.
AfsarHussain-CRP, Rajshahi divisional branch of Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP), organized the meeting with stakeholders’ at Safawang Conference hall in Rajshahi city. Integrated Disability and Livelihood Project and Spinal Cord Injury Development Association (SCIDAB) jointly supported the programme.
CRP center manager Soma Begum gave a brief resume of the consultation besides narrating the CRP activities in the region.
During his welcome speech, Kamruzzaman Kamrul, Treasurer of SCIDAB, said the organization was founded to establish the rights of the people with spinal cord injuries. SCIDAB is encouraging SCI people to continue their education, higher education and they have been providing financial assistances for many students.
The core objective of SCIDAB is to organize SCI people in Bangladesh and ensure their mainstream development in the society along with the socio-economic empowerment.
Mahbub Jaman Bhulu, Administrator of Zilla Parishad, addressed the meeting as chief guest saying that community people should take up the responsibility of creating an enabling environment for them in the society to improve their participation and accessibility to services and resources.
Former Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and
retired Deputy Director of Department of Social Services Mozammel Haque spoke on the occasion as special guests. Maksudunnabi Murad, President of SCIDAB, chaired the discussion.
Bhulu said time has come to empower persons with spinal cord injuries (SCI) for sustainable growth and development to ensure their rights and entitlement in the society. Emphasis should be given on establishing policy and rules to exclusively protect the interests of persons with SCI in the society, he added.
All of us should work together to create a favorable environment for the SCI people by removing various social, economic and infrastructural barriers.
He urged all to unite persons with SCI for collective action towards
establishing their economic, social, cultural, political and environmental rights in the society.
The meeting discussed elaborately devising ways and means how to expand the CRP activities for well-being of the people with special needs.
