500 sued: Many flee home amid fears of arrest: Probe body formed

Around 500 unnamed people were sued and Section-144 was imposed in the Phulbaria municipality area of Mymensingh district on Monday morning following the Sunday’s violence that killed a teacher of Phulbaria Degree College and a fish trader.

The upazila administration on Monday imposed Section 144 for an indefinite period from the Phulbaria municipal area to Valikajan in the wake of the yesterday’s widespread violence.

The Section 144, which has been enforced from 9am on Monday, will stay in force until further notice, an official of Phulbaria upazila administration said.

Sub-Inspector Rafiq of Phulbaria Police Station, filed a case accusing 400 to 500 people on Sunday night, said Rifat Bin Rajib, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Following the incident, many students and locals of the Phulbaria municipal area have fled their homes amid fears of arrest, residents.

 “The situation is tense. People are fleeing because of the heavy movement of law enforcers,” said a villager of the area.

Hazrat Ali, brother of dead Safar Ali, who was also killed in Sunday’s violence, filed an unnatural death case with Phulbaria police station. On Sunday, Abul Kalam Azad, a teacher of the Botany Department of the college and Safar Ali, 70, a fish trader, were killed and 100 others injured as police clubbed the protesters indiscriminately.

Meanwhile, Abul Kalam Azad, an associate professor of Botany Department of the college, who was killed in the Sunday’s violence, was buried at his family graveyard at village West Kadirpur in Nandail upazila amid tight security.

His namaz-e-janaza was held at Furkania Madrassa premises amid tight security.

The teachers and students of the college and locals have been continuing their agitation demanding nationalisation of the college for the last few months as it has all the facilities similar to that of the government colleges.

When contacted Syed Nurul Islam, Superintendent of Police of Mymensingh district told The New Nation on Monday that the situation is now under control.

 “We hope the situation will improve further,” he said.

When contacted Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Monday said a three-member probe body led by Shamsul Huda, Director of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education has been formed to investigate the incident.

 “I’m saddened over the death of a teacher. Shamsul Huda is now visiting the spot to investigate the incident. We have taken the issue seriously,” he added.

Bangladesh College Shikkhok Samiti staged demonstration and took a protest rally in front of the National Press Club in the city yesterday demanding exemplary punishment to those involved in killing the teacher.
