People’s welfare to achieve SDG stressed

Bangladesh institute of Labour Studies(BILS) organised an orientation programme and discussion meeting with media representatives titled “Sustainable Development Goal and Labour Law Amendment: Labour Situation in Bangladesh, Development Scope and Role of Media” at BILS Seminar Hall in the city yesterday.
Eminent labour leader and BILS Advisory Council Member Roy Ramesh Chandra was present as Chief Guest at the inaugural session of the programme while Executive Director Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmmed presided over.
Development Synergy Institute Executive Director Monower Mostafa discussed as an expert. Two key note papers titled “Sustainable Development Goal and Wage Fixation : Bangladesh Perspective” and Labour Rights : Proposed EPZ Labour Act – 2016″ were presented respectively by journalist Ataur Rahman and BILS Advocacy Officer Adv. Nazrul Islam.
Speakers at the programme discussed different worker’s related issues like poverty elimination, Wages at Informal Sector, Decent Work, Social Safety Net, livelihood of workers, women and children’s rights, Occupational Health and Safety, legal issues for workers, Equal Rights, Labour Law Amendment, EPZ Law etc. Besides, several recommendations were placed about the contribution of media to achieve the SDG for workers welfare.
Mentioning development initiatives of state players as capitalist and profit oriented, discussants of the program emphasized on people’s welfare to achieve the goals of SDG.
Representatives from different media attended the meeting. BILS Project Coordinator Kohinoor Mahmood, Reseach Coordinator Afzal Kabir Khan and Information Coordinator Yousuf Al Mamun also spoke among others.
