Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Friday said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has started a new game in the name of national unity centring the anti-terrorism and anti-militancy issue. The Awami League leader urged all to be united against terrorism and militancy.
“The common people of the country are united against militancy and terrorism following the attack in Holey Artisan Bakery at Gulshan on July 1. At the same time, Khaleda Zia has started playing game in the country’s political arena. It’s a unity-unity game,” he said.
Hanif said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organised by Awami Juba League (AJL) at Shilpakala Academy at Segunbagicha in the city marking the 67th birthday of Bangabandhu’s eldest son Shaheed Sheikh Kamal.
On the occasion, Hanif also inaugurated a photographic exhibition on slain Sheikh Kamal.
AJL Chairman Omar Faruque Chowdhury presided over the discussion, also addressed, among others, by General Secretary Harunur Rashid, presidium member Shaheed Serniabat and Awami League Central Working Committee member and former acting chairman of AJL Nurul Mazid Humayun. Dhaka City North AJL general secretary Ismail Hossain conducted the function.
Criticising Begum Zia’s parleys with the representatives of the civil society on national unity, Hanif said, “There is a so-called civil society in our country. They rushed to Khaleda Zia’s place on their own initiative following her call.”
“Khaleda Zia gave the call for national unity two days after our leader and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appealed for people’s unity against militancy and terrorism. Terming the Gulshan militant attack as a bloody coup, she has extended support to militancy,” he added.
Paying deep tributes to Sheikh Kamal, Hanif said, “We have lost a rare personality in his death …we have been feeling the absence of a seasoned organizer of his stature even 45 years after the independence.”
