No bus was seen plying in Rajshahi city nor was allowed to enter on Friday ahead- the day the Jatiya Oikyafront, a newly floated opposition alliance, organiszed a meeting on the day at Madrasa maidan.
In absence of transports, as the transport leaders and workers announced a 48-hour strike in Rajshahi and Natore yesterday, suffering to the commuters knew no bounds.
Many commuters had to walk or try other means of transports for reaching their destinations due to
unavailability of buses, reports our staff correspondent visiting different areas in the city.
The transport strike began in Natore yesterday (Thursday). Dhaka-Natore-Rajshahi road link Rajshahi ahead of Oikyafront rally.
However, General Secretary of Rajshahi Road Transport Owners’ Group Monjur Rahman told journalists that the transport strike had been withdrawn last night. When asked why no bus was seen plying on the roads, he said, “That could be due to the fact that some individual bus owners and drivers were afraid of the past violence and atrocities committed and they chose not to ply on the road ahead of the rally.” A transport leader in Rajshahi told this correspondent seeking anonymity that they were instructed not to rent buses to those who organized the meeting and those who attended.
The leaders and workers faced difficulty to reach the programme venue at Madrasa Maidan in Rajshahi city yesterday afternoon due to lack of vehicles. Bus owners did not comply with ethics after bookings.
The law enforcers were also checking all other kinds of vehicles, especially four-wheelers at different intersections and entry points of Rajshahi city.
