The people of Defolbaria village under Jhenaidah Sadar upazila got panicked when the unknown snakes have been biting the people for last two months.
The affected people have been moving here and there to get relived from the bite. A section of snake charmers including some so called Kabiraj have been doing the brisk business throwing the lives at risk, said the locals.
The Health Department personalizes said, the people due to their ignorance have been seeking the assistance from the snake charmers and Kabiaraj and for this reason they are not rushing to the hospitals for proper treatment.
Locals said, Khadeja Khatun, 45, of the village fallen sick when an unknown snake had bitten her on March 28 last. She was procuring straw from a stack at her home stead. The family members instead of the hospital had taken her to a local Kabiraj Mamtaz Begum. Mamtaz applied some mum words with an unique technique in the name of treatment. Later Khodeza succumbs to her injuries.
When the local people asked Mamtaz about the reason behind the death, Mamtaz said Khodeja had died of poisonous fairy snake.
Mamun, a villager said, about a hundred people, including the school children were bitten up by the unseen snakes in past three months in the village. The so called Kabiraj has been doing the brisk business as “Sadka” in the name of saving their lives of the affected persons.
A snake bite affected villager Abdur Rahim said, he was taking rest at his courtyard of his house in the afternoon.
Suddenly an unseen snake had bitted up him. He went to Mamataj and she made him well within a few minutes. She said, the poison from the fairy snake arrived near his brain. She (Mamtaz) charge Taka 110 from him, Rahim said.
Abdur Razzaque, head master of Defolbaria high school said, at least 50 learners in the area were affected by unseen snake in past two months that was treated with the mysterious words of Mamtaz Kabiraj.
Kabiraj Mamtab Begum when contacted said, she is not a Kabiraj at all. As the people rush to her, she has been doing her best to make them poison-free. The people gladly have been donating money to her, she said.
Civil Surgeon of Jhenadah Dr. Abdus Salam when contacted said, he was not informed about biting of any unknown snake in the area. He advised the people to send the snake-bite affected ones to government hospital at no delay. Ignorance of the common people about the snake bite was mainly liable for treating then to local Kabiraj or others, Civil Surgeon said.
