People of Bangladesh, especially youths, couldn’t exercise their voting rights for last 10 years, experts said at a discussion yesterday.
This was said at a round table organized by The Dhaka Forum (TDF), a non-political platform of cross-section of citizens, on “National Election of Bangladesh” at the Jatiya Press Club. Economists, former bureaucrats, political thinkers and good-governance campaigners stressed on how to arrange a free, fare and participatory Election.
Dr Salahuddin Ahammed, President of TDF said, there is no alternative to the sustainable democracy in our country. In 1991, there was a convenient festival of national election, but today there is no environment of voting. Rather if someone wants to vote freely, he may not be able.
In this critical situation, all journalists have to work sincerely in order to create better environment for next election, Salauddin added.
Prof Dilara Choudhury said, today country faces uncertainty. None but representative government can tackle this. Today enormous females are harassed every day,but there is no justice, Dilara added.
Engineer Enamoul Haque said, civil society should not talk only at the talk show and seminars, rather they have to visit the mass people to make them conscious for the next election.
Dr. Asif Nazrul said, last 10 years people could not cast their votes. Our youths are also deprived of their rights. The keynote paper was presented in the program by former Ambassador M. Serajul Islam.
Former caretaker government Adviser Dr Hafizuddin presided at the program.
