News Desk :
PEN Bangladesh strongly condemns the recent arrest of Anonno Mamun, a Bangladeshi film director. He has been charged under pornography law due to a scene of his new film Nabab LLB. The scene in question depicted a policeman crudely interrogating a rape victim. The police allege that the scene tarnishes the image of the force.
A trailer of the fictional courtroom drama was released on 16 December 2020 on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxxEeTp4MjY) and drew the ire of the police force.
PEN Bangladesh strongly feels that this kind of arrest will badly affect the space for free expression and artistic creativity in the country.
PEN Bangladesh urges the government of Bangladesh to drop all charges against Anonno Mamun and to revise the Digital Security Act to remove contradictions with universal fundamental rights, which are also assured in the Bangladesh constitution.
