The country’s largest LNG-run power plant having 3600MW electricity generation capacity will be set up at Payra in Patuakhali.
To implement the project, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed today (Sunday) between North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL) of Bangladesh and Siemens AG, Germany.
Three power plants having 1200MW generation capacity of each will be set at payra, the largest Liquate Natural Gas (LNG) base power plant in the country.
Prime Minister’s Energy Adviser Dr. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, Prime Minister’s office chief coordinator (SDG) Md. Abul Kalam Azad and German Ambassador to Dhaka Dr Thomas Prinz will be present in the signing ceremony.
Talking with The New Nation, State Minister Nasrul Hamid said that the government gives importance to diversification in electricity generation. The project will be the best of an example, he said.
“The NWPGCL and the Siemens AG will jointly finance the project,” he said.
Several solar power projects, including the establishment of solar parks, are being implemented to bring diversification in power generation, the state minister said.
According to the project details, the companies will also construct the LNG terminal there for ensuring availability of necessary natural gas to generate electricity.
Nasrul Hamid said the government will build energy hub in different parts of the country to smooth and uninterrupted electricity supply.
As per the line in July 13 this year, the state-owned Ashuganj Power Station Company Ltd (APSCL) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China Energy Engineering Corporation Ltd, commonly known as Energy China, to set up a 1,320MW coal-based power plant in Patuakhali.
The state minister also said Bangladesh will need to produce 24,000 MW of electricity to achieve the middle-income country status.
“After achieving the 24,000MW goal, we will be planning for producing 60,000MW of electricity,” hoped Nasrul Hamid.
