Patients live in unlimited and untold sufferings in the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in the capital.
There are plenty of allegations against the total treatment and management systems of the hospital.
” Agents, sweepers and nannies rule the hospital, compel us to give them Tk 500 for dressing a leg against the real cost of Tk 50,” said, Sharmila, a wife of a patient who was admitted to the hospital with serious leg injury from a road accident.
Most of the patients accused the officials, nurses and nannies of realising extra money for physiotherapy, plastering and dressing, and even for pushing the patients’ trolleys.
The NITOR is an orthopedic hospital and an institute in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. It was established in 1972 named as Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital. In October 2002 the name of the institute was changed to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).
There are accusations against the nurses and other officials that they frequently ask for money from the patients under the pretext of buying medical essentials for them. But a very little thereof are used.
“Firstly agents and nannies spread panic about targeted patients and then demand an amount from them for getting quick treatment. If anyone ignores it, they hurl very indecent words to him and his attendants. They even warn of the delayed treatment if demanded amount is not paid,” said, Sujan from Comilla.
He accused the officials of keeping him in the floor for two days, saying there was no vacant seat. But another patient managed a seat in exchange of demanded money.
The patients and their relatives accused the doctors of ignoring proper treatment. Very often doctors are seen gossiping in their rooms, but the nurses and other officials say to the emergency patients that doctors are not in their rooms or busy in operation theater.
They also alleged that nurses act according to their whims and caprice. If any patient’s attendant asks for emergency help, it is overlooked as long as the nurses are not made happy.
Many patients alleged about the filthiness of the hospital. The foods so served to the patients are also unsafe and unhygienic as cockroaches and other insects freely move on the foods. Besides, cats are also seen taking foods from the patients’ dishes.
The number of emergency toilets for serious patients is scanty. Many road injured patients get themselves admitted and cannot walk to the toilets. The hospital authorities are under obligation to arrange emergency toilets with curtains for them. But the number being very inadequate, most of the patients of serious nature suffer.
When contacted, Mahfuzul Haque Talukdar, Superintendent of the hospital admitted the shortfall of curtains. He also said that few guards cannot stop cats from entering the hospital.
But the Director and the Joint-Director of the hospital ignored the phone calls.
