Selling of facilities by many employees at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital has been creating untold sufferings to the patients.
The employees in different sections of the hospitals have some facilities to enjoy like medical check-up, doctors’ visiting, X-ray, Ultra-sonogram, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanning and others. And the employees can enjoy such facilities by rotations of every three patients.
Some written directions have been seen outside the X-ray and ultra-sonogram rooms and in other sections that read, “The staff of the hospital will enjoy facilities after every three ordinary patients.”
The patients alleged that the employees make the
facilities as a business. Most of the time they sell the facilities to the patients come from across the country. In most of the cases, the employees introduce the patients as their relatives, though they are totally unknown to them. They give them the chance in exchange of money.
It makes the patients two edged sufferer: Firstly, the patients’ entry delayed for getting services as the employees take the facilities after every three patients.
Secondly, the employees become busy with hunting patients and selling the facilities to them.
“We are waiting for long but some patients get X-ray facilities coming one hour after us. Some dishonest staff members introduced the late-comer persons as their relatives in exchange of money,” alleged Abul Kashem, a patients standing in a row for X-ray, who came from Bhola.
On the other hand, patients suffer in the absence of staff in their own desks when they go to them to get certain services. They usually become busy with hunting patients who agree to buy facilities in exchange of money.
“My mother has lung infection. The doctors of BSMMU advised us to take some blood testing reports soon. But the employees reliable to give the reports were not in seat. They were found busy with hunting patients outside the row or at the end of the waiting line,” said Ashish, a youth from Banaripara, Barisal.
Patients taking the facilities from the employees said they are enjoying the chance by giving various amount of money from Tk100 to 500, considering the Emergency of the patients.
In some cases the employees also influence during seat and cabin allotments to the patients. When the patients are sufferings due to shortage of seats, the employees allot seats to others introducing them as their relatives.
When contacted Dr. Mukhlesuzzaman Hero, Deputy Director of the BSMMU Hospital told The New Nation yesterday, “There are no such written complaints against any employees in our office. If we get any allegations against any employees we must take departmental actions against them.”
However, some officials said they favour some patients by using such facilities. “We do not take money in every case. If any poor people or known person come from village, we help them,” said a staff of Pathology Section preferring anonymity.
