Passengers suffer at HSIA for workers’ demo

Hundreds of passengers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on Sunday faced severe sufferings in view of the demonstration by a section of workers of Biman Bangladesh Airlines demanding regularisation of their jobs.
The workers refrained from all types of work since Sunday morning and returned to work at 3:30pm after getting assurance that their demand will be looked carefully.
The inbound and outbound passengers had to wait for hours to get services as the ground handling operations were interrupted following the work abstention programme.
During the workers’ programme, members of Ansar, Armed Police Battalion (APBn) and Civil Aviation
since Sunday morning and returned to work at 3:30pm after getting assurance that their demand will be looked carefully.
The inbound and outbound passengers had to wait for hours to get services as the ground handling operations were interrupted following the work abstention programme.
During the workers’ programme, members of Ansar, Armed Police Battalion (APBn) and Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) were asked to conduct the ground handling operation as the Biman workers observing work abstention, said Group Captain Abdullah Farooq, Director of the HSIA.
Biman is responsible for ground handling operations in the airport, he said.
Yet, the loading and unloading operations were hampered on account of workers’ demonstration, he added.
However, the regular schedule of the airport remained normal. On an average, 200 domestic and international flights take off and land at the airport.
Biman Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director AM Mosaddique Ahmed told the media that he was on his way to the airport and also acknowledged that the passenger. The casual workers of the national flag carrier have been demonstrating for long asking for regularisation of their jobs.
