A Barisal court on Monday sentenced father and mother to life term imprisonment for killing 29-day old daughter.
Matiar Rahman, additional district and session judge of Barisal, delivered the judgment in absence of the both accused.
The sentenced parents were Sukharanjan Mistri and his wife Arati Rani Mistri of Adhuna village under Gournadi upazila of Barisal.
The court also fined both of the parents Tk 5,000 or to serve more one-year and Tk 1,000 or to serve more 1 month imprisonment in defaults under two separate sections of the penal code.
The judgment was delivered after examining 11 out of 14 witnesses and other related evidences and documents.
Headayetunnabi Zakir, bench assistant of the court, said Arati Rani on June 4, 2010 alleged about missing of their 29-day old daughter and the locals informed the matter to police.
Then police searching the area recovered dead body of the neonatal girl from the safety tank of the latrine in the house.
Shahjalal Khalifa, sub-inspector and dead body recovery officer, as complainant lodged a case in this connection with Gournadi police station against the parents of the neonatal girl on next day.
Sub Inspector Mizanul Huq, investigation officer of the case, filed charge sheet against the parents on September 30, 2010.
In the charge sheet it was alleged that the neonatal girl was killed by her parents to follow the order of the Devi for satisfying her by killing that daughter.
