Directive to open: Panthapath road by today

Staff Reporter :The area of Sundarban Hotel in the capital city is still not free from risk, as apprehension of fresh cracks on road and collapse of nearby buildings exits there.  Urban planners and experts said, the whole area in and around the construction site of the multi-storey building `Twin Tower` of National Bank Limited and the nearby buildings have become vulnerable due to land subsidence. Even, moderate rainfall may further affect the six-storey building of the Sundarban Hotel, which has already been declared risky.Brigadier General Ali Ahmed Khan, Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence, said that the soil in and around the Sundarban Hotel area and the link road became very weak after Wednesday’s collapse of the boundary wall of the hotel.Earlier, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) decided to keep Hatirpool-SAARC Fountain-Panthapath Road closed till today (Sunday). DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon disclosed the decision on Friday, fearing further land subsidence. The Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkhya (RAJUK) and the construction firms were asked to free the collapsed road and its adjoining areas from risks by Sunday. The sand filling of the spot was progressing at a slow pace. So it is not clear whatever the road will be opened by today or not. The city dwellers are experiencing immense suffering due to traffic congestion because of the incident and closing of the vehicular movement in the busy area of the city.
