Unpredictable Pakistan reached the final of the ICC Champions Trophy defeating favourites England by eight wickets in the first semi-final at Cardiff on Wednesday.
Chasing England’s modest total of 211 off 49.5 overs, Pakistan sailed home making 215 runs for the loss of two wickets when they had 77 balls to spare.
Pakistan will face the winner of the second semi-final between Bangladesh and India scheduled to be held today at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The do-or-die match starts at 3.30 pm (Bangladesh Time).
Pakistan made a formidable start as openers Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman piled up together 118 runs in the opening stand before Fakhar Zaman was stumped out by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler off Adil Rashid.
Fakhar Zaman notched up a superb 57. His 58-ball innings was studded with seven fours and a sixer.
After dismissal of Fakhar Zaman, Azhar Ali and Babar Zaman built another notable partnership. They put on together 55 runs for the second wicket stand before Azhar Ali was bowled out by Jake Ball when Pakistan’s total was 173 for the loss of two wickets.
Azhar Ali top-scored with 76. He hit five fours and a sixer in his 100-ball knock.
Babar Zaman and Mohammad Hafeez brought their to reach the winning target adding together 42 runs for the unbroken third wicket partnership. Babar Zaman remained unbeaten with 38. His 45-ball innings was laced with two fours and a sixer.
Mohammad Hafeez remained unbeaten with 31. His 21-ball innings was belted with three fours and two sixes.
Jake Ball and Adil Rashid took one wicket apiece.
Earlier, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes and Eoin Morgan scored 46, 43, 34 and 33 runs respectively.
Hasan Ali captured three wickets instead of 35 runs, while Junaid Khan and Rumman Raees bagged a couple of wickets each for 42 and 44 runs respectively.
Hasan Ali was adjudged the Man of the Match.
