The investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal will start a probe into the war crimes allegedly committed by 195 Pakistani soldiers during the Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.
The Agency’s Chief Coordinator Abdul Hannan Khan disclosed the plan at a press conference convened on Sunday in Dhaka to make public the reports in two cases filed against eight suspected war criminals in Gaibandha, Habiganj and Kishoreganj.He later told bdnews24.com, “Information (about their crimes) is being collected. The process is on. We’ve found evidence about the complicity of the Pakistanis in war crimes while investigating other cases.”
“The government’s permission is required as this involves other governments. Formal probe will begin after the ground is ready and government gives permission,” he added.
Bangladesh started trials of the 195 soldiers after the Liberation War. They were later repatriated following a tripartite agreement in which Pakistan had committed to try them.
The country, however, broke its word later.
