Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bengali New Year-1424, was celebrated through various programmesa in different districts on Friday with much enthusiasm and traditional festivities with a vow to building a non-communal, happy and prosperous country. Our correspondents and agencies report:
Khulna Correspondent says: Like other parts of the country, Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bengali New Year, 1424 was celebrated in Khulna city and at nine upazilas of Khulna district on Friday in a befitting manner with great enthusiasm, fanfare and festivity.
Khulna District administration, different socio-cultural organizations , professional and business organizations, Educational Institutions, NGOs private bodies and political parties celebrated the Pohela Boishakh, Bangla Nabobarsho by taking elaborate programs in the city and district also.
 To mark the day, Khulna district administration began the day with a colorful procession which started from Shibbari Intersection and ended at Officers Club through Dakbanglo in the city. Cultural programme and ‘Panta Utsob’ was held at Bakultala premises at the residence (Bang low) of Khulna deputy commissioner in the morning.
A discussion meeting about the heritage and history of Bengali New Year was held at the Jatisangho Shishu Park followed by a cultural programme. A three day ‘Boishakhi Mela’ has also been started on the same venue.
Khulna Shishu Academy celebrated Pohela Baishakh with the children.
Khulna Central Jail and ‘Shishu Poribar-3 (Children Orphanage-3) arranged cultural programs and exhibited different commodities which made by the prisoners of central jail.
Khulna Divisional Public Library authority arranged essay competition for children and Khulna Islamic Foundation arranged discussion meeting.
All Educational Institutions including Khulna University (KU), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Govt. B.L. College, Daulatpur Govt. Muhsin High School and Muhsin Girls’ School arranged colorful programs to celebrate Nabobarsho.
Daulatpur govt. Mohsin High school, a 150 year old high school in Khulna city, has a special significance because the Vice-chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique was the student of this school and he passed his SSC from this school in 1969 AD.  
Khulna City Unit Awami League brought out a colorful procession (Mongol Shovajatra) and held discussion meeting, cultural program and ‘Panta Utsob’ on the occasion.
Staff Reporter from Kishoreganj adds: Pahela Baishakh was celebrated in the district with enthusiasm and traditional gaiety on Friday aim high security.
Kishoreganj District Administration, socio-cultural organisations, educational institutions ruling Awami League, Press Club and NGOs took part in the programmes.
Kishoreganj District Administration arranged a programme marking the Baishakh at Biam Labratroy School maidan.
A discussion meeting was held at Biam Labratory School Maidan with Deputy Comissioner Md. Azimuddin Biswas in the chair. Dilara Begum Asma M.P attented as chief guest. It was addressed among other by Zila Parished CEO Shibir Bitichara Barua, Additional Police Super Md. Rakib Khan, ADC (Gen) Tarafder Md. Akther Jamil, Sadar UNO Abdullah Al Masud, Muktijoddha Comonder Haji Md. Asadullah, Upazila Vice-Chairman Kamrunnahar Luna, Sanak President Saiful Haque Mollah Dulu and CAB President Alam Sarowar Tito. A Mongal Shovajatra was brought out in the town led by Dilara Begum Asma MP and D.C Md. Azimuddin Biswas on the occassion of Pahela Baishakh.
Bagerhat Correspondent reports: Pahela Baishakh, was celebrated in Bagerhat district town and its all the nine upazilas with enthusiasm, fanfare and traditional festivities on Friday.
This year’s celebration was held on large scale basis as well as with much traditional gaiety as the “Mongol Shovajatra” earned UNESCO recognition as world heritage.
Earlier the district and Upazila administrations and different socio-cultural and political organizations chalked out different elaborate progmmes to celebrate the day in a befitting manner.
In Bagerhat district town the day’s programme started with a Barsha Baran Shovajatra that started from Bagerhat Shaikh Helal Uddin stadium at 8-30 am and ended at Local Zila Parishad community centre premises after parading the main roads of the district town. It was led by Dr. Al-haj Mozammel Hossain, MP of Bagerhat Constituency-4 and the President of the Parliamentary Permanent Committee of the Ministry of the Social-welfare affairs, Al-haj Adv. Mir Shawkat Ali Badsha, MP of Bagerhat Comnstituency-2 and President of the Parliamentary Permanent Committee of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock affairs, Tapan Kumar Biswas, DC, Bagerhat and Pankaj Chandra Roy Police Super of Bagerhat. The Shova Jatra was attended by all walks of people irrespective of ages and sexes carrying various banners, placards and festoons welcoming the Bangla New Year.
After the end of the Shova Jatra Dr. Al-haj Mozammel Hossain, MP ceremonially inaugurated a week-long Baishakhi Mela in the local Zila Parishad auditorium premises as the chief guest in presence of large number of juvenile crowds. A good number of stalls sprung around the fair.
Other highlights of the day’s programme were discussions, eating of Pantha with dried hilsa fish and green chilli, distribution of improved diets among the prisoners in jail, patients in hospitals and the orphans in the orphanages, fancy games, cultural shows etc.
On the occasion, Bagerhat Press Club arranged a get together in its auditorium with Ahad Uddin Haidar, President of the club in the chair.
Rangpur Correspondent says: Bangla Nabobarsho 1424 was celebrated with much enthusiasm in Rangpur on Friday. Different government and non-government organisations chalked out various programmes on the occasion. Different socio-cultural organisations and NGOs took part in the programmes.
The officials of government and non-government organisations brought out a colourful procession in the morning that paraded the main roads of the town.
Traditional Bengali food like ‘hilsa fish’ and ‘panta’ rice was served among the people. Folk dance and song competition was held at local Public Library premises.
Gouripur(Mymensingh) Correspondent adds: Pahela Baishakh was celebrated on Friday amid traditional festivities and enthusiasm in Gouripur Upazila in Mymensingh on Friday .
Different socio-cultural organizations drew up elaborate programmes to celebrate the day . People from all walks of life , cultural and professional organisations, institutions and. clubs, such as Gouripur Govt. College, Gouripur Women College, Gouripur Govt. Technical School and College, Gouripur R.K.Govt. High school, Gouripur Pilot Girls High School, Nurul Amin Khan High School, Chader Hat Agradut Niketon , Govt Textile Vocational Institute, Islamabad Senior Madrasha , Upazila Parishad and Upazila Shilpakala Academy brought out a colourful procession at Gouripur town at 9 a m carrying festoons ,placards, posters, banners, and wearing masks to welcome the Bangla New Year,1424 . This rally was attended by Margina Akter ,UNO of Gouripur upazila while Mayor Syed Rafiqul Islam and Upazila, Vice Chairman Rabeya Islam Dali were present.
Upazila Shilpakala Academy held a cultural programme at Gouripur Upazila Parishad Aam Tala at 10:00 am and Gouripur Upazila Parishad organised a feeding of Panta Bath for entertainment of the guest . The celebrations reached a peak in the afternoon with people at different popular and historic spots in the town and elsewhere across the upazila to welcome the Bangla New Year, 1424. Men, wearing panjabi-pyjama, women attired in saris with red borders, and children in colourful dresses.
 Bangla Mancha held a cultural programme at Bangabandhu Chattar in the afternoon participated by leading artists of Gouripur Upazila .
RU correspondent adds: Pahela Boishakh was celebrated through age old traditional events, customs and festivity at Rajshahi University (RU) campus on Friday.
The programmes to celebrate the country’s most secular and major traditional events include colorful rally, Boishakhi Fair , Chaittrasankranti, music soiree, rendering of folk songs, discussion, art and painting competition and recitation of poems, among others.
The whole university wore a festive look as most of the department of the university chalked out elaborate programmes separately at a lot of places of the campus.
An air of festivity was specially felt around fine arts faculty of the university. They brought out the colorful processions on the campus from early in the morning with decorative replicas of animals as well as elements of Bengali culture.
The department also held Boishakhi fair featuring art and rafts exhibition and cultural programmes including Ghambhira at fine arts Chattar.
Prof Mohammad Sayen Uddin, treasurer of the university inaugurated the programmes at 9:00am as a chief guest while other officials and different department’s chairmen were present as special guests.
BSS from Gaibandha reports: Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bengali New Year-1424, was celebrated in the district on Friday with much enthusiasm and traditional festivities with a vow to building a non-communal, happy and prosperous country.
Marking the day, district administration, Gaibandha Press Club, Sadar Upazila Model School and College, Udichi Shilpi Goshti, Dariapur Sangskritik Jote, and other socio-cultural organizations including some NGOs chalked out elaborate programmes.
The programmes included bringing out Mongol Shobhajatra, eating of panta vaat with fried hilsha fish and chili, discussion meeting, staging drama, arrangement of Baishakhi mela, kite flying and cultural function.
The programmes also included nagor dola, rendering pala gaan, jari gaan, shari gaan and folk song, reciting poems, holding halkhata in business establishments and distribution of sweets among customers.
In the morning, a big colorful rally led by Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini was brought out from Independence Square and ended at the same venue after parading the main roads of the town to welcome the Bangla New Year.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) M. Abdus Samad, district and upazila level officials, cultural personalities, social workers, businessmen carrying banners, festoons, traditional handicrafts, household utensils, fishing instruments, beating drums and playing musical instruments participated in the procession singing ‘Esho Hey Baishakh Esho Esho’.
BSS from Rajshahi reports : Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year-1424, was celebrated in the city and its adjacent areas since this morning with a festive mood and enthusiasm.
Ignoring heat weather, children, youths, men, women and activists of the socio-cultural, voluntary and professional organizations wearing traditional dresses came out on the streets after sunrise to welcome the Bengali New Year.
The programs of the day were heralded in the city by inaugurating a ‘Mongol Shobayatra’ on Collegiate School premises. Rajshahi district administration arranged the colourful rally.
Divisional Commissioner Noor-Ur-Rahman, Additional Commissioners Aminul Islam and Sultan Abdul Hamid and Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ashraf Uddin were present in the opening programme.

People took to the street in cheerful mood bringing out the colorful and traditional rally -“Mongol Shobhajatra” organized by Faridpur district administration.
