Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year-1425, was celebrated in different districts with a festive mood and enthusiasm on Saturday. Various colourful programmes were taken to observe the day . Our correspondents and agencies report:
Bagerhat Correspondent reports: Pahela Baishak, the first day of Bengali New Year 1425 was celebrated in Bagerhat district town and its all the nine upazilas with enthusiasm, fanfare and traditional festivities on Saturday .
Like last year this year’s celebration was also held on large scale basis as well as with much traditional gaiety as the “Mongol Shobhajatra (auspicious procession)” earned UNESCO recognition as world heritage in the last year.
Earlier the district and Upazila administrations and different socio-cultural and political organizations chalked out different elaborate progmmes to celebrate the day in a befitting manner.
In Bagerhat district town the day’s programme started with a Barsha Baran Shovajatra that started from Bagerhat Shaikh Helal Uddin stadium at 8-30 am and ended at Local Zila Parishad community centre premises after parading the main roads of the district town. It was led by Dr Al-haj Mozammel Hossain, MP of Bagerhat Constituency-4 and the President of the Parliamentary Permanent Committee of the Ministry of the Social-welfare affairs, Al-haj Adv. Mir Shawkat Ali Badsha, MP of Bagerhat Comnstituency-2 and President of the Parliamentary Permanent Committee of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock affairs, Tapan Kumar Biswas, DC, Bagerhat and Pankaj Chandra Roy Police Super of Bagerhat. The Shova Jatra was attended by people from all walks of people irrespective of ages and sexes carrying various banners, placards and festoons welcoming the Bangla New Year.
After the end of the Shova Jatra Dr Al-haj Mozammel Hossain, MP ceremonially inaugurated a week-long Baishakhi Mela in the local Zila Parishad auditorium premises as the chief guest in presence of large number of juvenile crowds. A good number of stalls sprung around the fair.
Businessmen of hats and bazars (market places), groceries, sales centers and important places in both rural and Urbana areas opened their traditional Hal Khatas (new account books) ceremonially and distributed sweets and seasonal fruits among the customers (Khariddars) hoping good business in the new Bangala year.
Other highlights of the day’s programme were discussions, eating of Pantha with dried hilsa fish and green chilli, distribution of improved diets among the prisoners in jail, patients in hospitals and the orphans in the orphanages, fancy games, cultural shows etc.
On the occasion Bagerhat Press Club arranged a get together programme in its auditorium with Ahad Uddin Haidar, President of the club in the chair. It was attended by the members of the club and their family-members.
No untoward incident took place in any where of the district town on the occasion due to adopting the tight security by the police administration of the district
RU Correspondent says: Pahela Baishakh was celebrated through age old traditional events, customs and festivity at Rajshahi University (RU) campus.
The programmes to celebrate the country’s most secular and major traditional events included colorful rally, Baishakhi Fair, Flash mob, Chaittrasankranti, music soiree, rendering of folk songs, discussion, art and painting competition and recitation of poems, among others.
The whole university wore a festive look as most of the department of the university chalked out elaborate programmes separately at a lot of places of the campus.
An air of festivity was specially felt around fine arts faculty of the university. They brought out the colorful processions on the campus from early in the morning with decorative replicas of animals as well as elements of Bengali culture.
Addressing the rally, RU vice-chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan urged the new generation to collect spirit from the day to build up the country upon the basis of the liberation war.
Law department also drew up different cultural events for marking the day while the pharmacy department organised a cartoon exhibition.
Besides, mass communication and journalism department, theatre and music department, folklore department, anthropology department, Bangla department and different voluntary, social, cultural organizations of the university arranged different traditional programmes to celebrate the day.

Different socio-cultural organizations drew up elaborate programmes to celebrate the day . People from all walks of life , cultural and professional organisations, institutions and. clubs, such as Gouripur Govt. College, Gouripur Women College, Gouripur Govt. Technical School and College, Gouripur R.K.Govt. High school, Gouripur Pilot Girls High School, Nurul Amin Khan High School, Chader Hat Agradut Niketon , Govt.Textile Vocational Institute, , Upazila Parishad and Upazila Shilpakala Academy brought out a colourful procession at Gouripur town at 8.30 a.m. carrying festoons ,placards, posters, banners, and wearing masks to welcome the Bangla New Year,1425 . This rally was attended by Freedom Fighter Alhaj Nazim Uddin Ahmed MP and Upazila Vice Chairman Rabeya Islam Doli was also present.
Upazila Shilpakala Academy held a cultural programme at Gouripur Upazila Parishad Aam Tala at 9:00am and Gouripur Upazila Parishad organised a feeding of Panta Bath with fried hilsha fish for entertainment of the guests . Men, wearing panjabi-pyjama, women attired in saris with red borders, and children in colourful dresses thronged different cultural functions in the town and elsewhere in 10 unions throughout the day. Bangla Mancha held a cultural programme at Bangabandhu Chattar in the afternoon to be participated by leading artists of Gouripur Upazila while Freedom Fighter Alhaj Nazim Uddin Ahmed MP was a chief guest. Besides rural areas of this upazila look festive mood with many outdoor games and cultural functions such as Jari Gan, Pala Gan,Ox fIghting, football, cricket, ha-do-do etc.
Dupchanchia (Bogra) Correspondent says: Pahela Baishakh was celebrated with much enthusiasm and tight security under Dupchanchia upazila of Bogura district on Saturday.
Police administration has taken additional security measures to avert any untoward incident on Pahela Baishakh. A special security measure has been taken especially at the Baishakhi mella, mongal shova jatra, and various socio-cultural organisations to celebrate the festival by the people from all walks of life.
Marking the day, Dupchanchia press club has brought out a motorcycle rally with white T-shirt and a colorful cap written top of Shuvo Bangla Nabobarsho. Later, Panta rice and hilsha fish have been eaten congressionally at the press club premises inaugurated by President Golam Faruq.
To make the entire programme a grand success, additional Police, plain cloth personnel have been deployed for vigil at important places of the upazila town on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh, said officer-in-charge Abdur Razzak of Dupchanchia police station.
Upazila Norbahi Officer (UNO) Shaheed Parvez said that administration has brought out the main Baishakhi rally carrying festoons, play cards, banners and singing Baishakhi and folk songs from upazila administration office premises at 8.30 am to welcome the Bangla New Year- 1425.

Braving heat weather, children, youths, men, women and activists of the socio-cultural, voluntary and professional organisations wearing traditional dresses came out on the streets after sunrise to welcome the Bengali New Year.
Besides, hundreds of men, women and children, in traditional colourful clothes, thronged Rajshahi College playground, Fudkipara open stage, Shishu Academy, Riverview Collectorate School playground and other venues especially the bank of the river Padma for celebrations of the occasion.
The programmes of the day were heralded in the city by inaugurating a colourful”Mongol Shobhajatra ” on Collegiate School premises. Rajshahi district administration arranged the well-decorated rally.
After parading some of the city streets, the rally was ended at the Riverview Collectorate School premises where a two-day “Boishakhi, Children Amusement Fair”, cultural function and blood donation programme were opened.
Akhter Jahan, MP, Divisional Commissioner Noor-Ur-Rahman, Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Masudur Rahman Bhuiyan, Deputy Commissioner SM Abdul Kader and Superintendent of Police Md Shahidullah were present in the opening programme.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) hosted a daylong celebration programme. Mayor Mosaddeque Hossain Bulbul attended many of the programmes.
Cultural groups and different organisations including Sammilita Sangskritik Jote arranged various programmes like musical functions, colourful marches and street side Baishakhi fairs in the city.
They brought out Baishakhi processions in the city streets carrying colourful festoons, placards and banners and singing Baishakhi songs, Palli Geeti, Gambhira, Jarigan, Vatiali, Baul, Lalon Geeti, Nazrul Geeti and Rabindra Sangeet and other folk and classical songs.
Baishakhi Melas, cultural functions, staging of dramas, doll-dances, Nagor Dola, kite flying competitions and discussions meeting were also arranged throughout the day.
