The Road Transport and Bridges Minister has said that the Ministry has decided to name the Padma Bridge ‘Sheikh Hasina Padma Bridge’ since the common people demand so.
Awami League General Secretary and Minister Obaidul Quader on Saturday said, “We have taken the decision of naming the bridge ‘Sheikh Hasina Padma Bridge’ on the basis of opinions and suggestions received from the common people.”

Bridge at Mawa Ghat, he told the reporters.
The minister said, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana wanted the bridge to be named after the river ‘Padma’. But I am under pressure of the common people to name the bridge as ‘Sheikh Hasina Padma Bridge’.”
He said, “We should show respect to our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her courageous decision of constructing the bridge despite the World Bank’s withdrawal from the bridge project. Sheikh Hasina has proved that she is a brave daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”
Fifty nine percent of the overall work of the Padma Bridge project have already been completed while 70 percent of the main bridge have been finished, he added.
