Over 700 Dhaka-bound containers have been remained stranded for last several days at the yards of Chittagong Seaport due to slow delivery in the backdrop of indefinite blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
However, the port authority has claimed that the container handling activities are not being hampered at the port due to piles of stranded containers at the yards. The container delivery service is normal in Chittagong city and it’s adjoining districts.
An official said, “We are sending containers to Dhaka at night as result there is no case of piling”.
According sources, the port always has a capacity to handle 22/24 thousand TEUs of containers. There are currently 26,443 TEUs containers at the port, of which most are goods laden containers.
Meanwhile, a large number of containers with export cargoes have remained stuck up at private container depots, causing a serious uncertainty over shipments.
