Over 51 lakh disadvantaged people getting allowance

As many as 51,20,000 under privileged people are getting monthly allowance regularly as the present government has fixed a target to eradicate extreme poverty from the country by 2030.
Poverty reduction is the core objective of the present government, which has undertaken all initiatives for gradual socio-economic development in the country.
A senior official of the ministry of social welfare on Sunday told that the government is providing allowances to 51,20,000 disabled, elderly people, widows and physically challenged students under the social safety net programme aimed at eradicating poverty from the country.
He said the government is emphasizing on target-oriented expansion of social protection programmes and ensuring its transparency as a means of reducing poverty and establishing social justice.
Earlier, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said that the government formulated the Seventh Fifth Year Plan (2016-2020) to reduce extreme poverty by about 4.0 percent down to around 8.9 percent by FY 2020.
He said Bangladesh under the dynamic and bold leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would be a middle income country by 2021, as she is committed to make the country poverty and hunger free as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
“Bangladesh has already achieved a lower middle-income country status.
Our Prime Minister also made remarkable progress in poverty alleviation in the country,” Kamal added.
According to ministry data, a total of 14,90,105 physically challenged
persons were identified in 2016. The information regarding all the identified physically challenged persons have been included in the ‘Disability Information System Database’.
Some 145 programmes relating to the social safety is being implemented, of which 95 social safety net programmes were implemented in 21 line ministries, a ministry official said.
He said the number of insolvent disabled beneficiaries are getting Taka 500 and Taka 600 as monthly allowance, while physically challenged students are getting Taka 500, Taka 600, Taka 700 and Taka 1,200 as per their level of study.
A total of 31.50 lakh old age disadvantaged poor people receive Taka 500 per month, while 11.50 lakh disadvantaged poor widow and oppressed by their husbands get Taka 500 per month.
Some 7.50 lakh insolvent physically challenged persons receive taka 600 as monthly allowance from the government.
Besides, the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is providing stipend to 70,000 physically challenged students as Taka 500, Taka 600, Taka 700 and Taka 1,200 based on level of education.
The government is prioritizing the programmes which are needed for
making the country poverty free. As well it want to change the fate of the
section of the people who are extreme poor and suffering from disability.
The government has also taken up a plan to provide identity cards to
all disabled persons by using the national disability database, and also to revise the existing development programmes and take up new initiatives by taking the nature of disability into account.
The government already formulated National Social Security Strategy (NSSS), 2015 in line with the implementation of the cherished “Vision 2021.”
