A total of 41,500 beneficiary smallholders including women of 736 village development cooperatives were brought under Ektee Bari Ektee Khamar project of the government in the district from 2009.
As per the strategy of the project, each of the smallholders is depositing TK 200 per month as savings and on the other hand, the government is also providing same amount of money to the beneficiary smallholders each as grant per month, office sources said.
Till June 2015, 700 cows worth TK 1.40 crore were distributed to 316 smallholders and poultry birds of TK 10.50 lakh to 210 smallholders to help them engage in income generating activities, sources said.
Not only that, different types of assets including corrugated iron sheets of TK 30.80 lakh were distributed to 308 beneficiaries, vegetable seed of TK 8.40 lakh to 840 and saplings of TK 6.30 lakh to 630 from the project so far.
Earlier, all the smallholders were trained up on different trades of agro farming including fisheries, poultry, animal husbandry, nursery and kitchen garden so that they could be successful in the job, said an official.
Rural Development and Cooperative Division, Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives with District Administration in particular Deputy Commissioner and his officials is performing the project work as the executing agency.
Besides, Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB) is doing the project work as the main support agency along with other departments like Co-operatives, Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development, Comilla, and Rural Development Academy (RDA), Bogra.
The goal of the project is to alleviate poverty and ensure sustainable development through fund mobilization followed by family farming livelihood and income generation of the under privileged and smallholders of the society, said M. Mizanur Rahman, deputy director of BRDB.
M. Mokbul Hossain, a smallholder of Dhanghara area under Sadar upazila, said the project had been running here creating positive impact to all the beneficiary members as they are earning economical profit through involving in different income generating activities.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) M. Abdus Samad said this is for the first time government is giving money to the poor people and village development organizations directly as grant for their primary capital to use it as revolving fund.
The project launched in 2009 was designed for five years till June, 2014 and later, it was revised till June, 2016.
