More than 3,000 farmers and common people have achieved self-reliance in Rangpur Division by cultivating highly profitable lemon having huge market demand round the year with lucrative price.
Having repeated bumper production with huge profits in recent years, the farmers have been showing growing interests in farming lemon in the orchards, homesteads, by the sides of their crop fields as live fences, char areas and other places in the region.
According to sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), different NGOs and local markets, cultivation of lemon has been expanding fast following its repeated bumper production and lucrative market price throughout the year.
Currently, every four pieces of lemon is being sold at Taka 16 and Taka 24 in the local markets depending on the variety, quality and size and the price might increase further during the holy month of Ramadan, market sources said.
The common people have been farming lemon in their homesteads though many farmers have set up lemon orchards as live fences around crop fields following huge demand and profits, Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khandker Md Mesbahul Islam said.
“The DAE has been providing necessary assistance to the farmers and common people for expanding lemon cultivation in orchards and homesteads to change their fortune and meet nutritional demand of the population,” he said.
Rangpur Regional Director of Agriculture Information Service Abu Sayem said that lemon cultivation has already become popular bringing self-reliance to hundreds of farmers, commoners, including women, in Rangpur region.
Farmer Motiar Rahman said he has planted 3,200 lemon trees as live fences around his 1.5 acre litchi orchards in village Deodoba of Rangpur to earn over Taka ten lakh by selling lemon alone annually without using separate land for the purpose.
Farmers Shahadat Ali and Rahim Uddin, distressed women Sohagi Khatun and Nabiron Bibi of different villages in Rangpur said they are cultivating lemon as live fences in their orchards and homesteads to earn excellent profits every year.
Successful farmers Shefali and Surya Begum of village Chuhor under Mithapukur upazila here said they have been earning better profits though cultivating lemon as live fences for their crop fields and also in homesteads.
Quasem Ali of village Patrokhata Khondkerpara in Chilmari upazila has set up a unique success by earning over Taka nine lakh annually through selling his cultivated lemon alone in 12 decimals land out of 48 decimal homestead croplands.
“I mostly cultivate local, China and Duck Zamir varieties of lemons and consumption of the Duck Zamir variety lemon is very beneficial to the jaundice and cough patients and it also increases milk for the baby- feeding mothers,” he added.
Similarly, farmers Habibur Rahman and Ayub Ali of Rangpur, Shachindra Nath and Joynul Abedin of Lalmonirhat, Nabinur of Panchagarh, Abdul Haque and Kohinoor Mian of Kurigram and many others have achieved self-reliance through lemon cultivation.
