The Bangladesh Bank has received reports of more than 300 suspicious transactions in the last two months.
This is a quantum jump because in the whole of 2013-14 fiscal, there were 619 suspicious transactions, according to the bank’s Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) annual report.
Central bank’s Executive Director and BFIU deputy chief M Mahfuzur Rahman on Sunday said there were usually about 50 murky transactions per month on an average.
“But we received reports of over 300 suspicious transactions in December and January alone,” he said after a BFIU meeting.
He explained that the reporting agencies had become more vigilant which perhaps explained the rise in the number of reported dubious transactions.
Banks, financial institutions, insurance companies, all companies registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, all non-government organisations and mobile financial service providers report suspicious transactions to the BFIU.
But most of them have been reported from the banking sector, Rahman said.
