At 31 No. Poldar of Water Development Board’s embankment in Dakop Upazila of Khulna district, Kapotakkho river erosion has taken a serious tern surrounding two villages Andharmanik and Khona.
 People of the two villages are passing sleepless night in fear of continuous river erosion. Dakop Upazila Chairman Alhaj Sheikh Abul Hossain and high officials of WDB has visited the spot already. During the visit different political leaders UP Chairmen and UP members, former general secretary of Dakop Press Club Asgar Hossain Sabbir, journalist Shipon Bhuyan and other persons were also present. Md.Abul Hossain, Superintendent Engineer of WDB assured of making alternative embankment and thereafter the permanent embankment as early as possible.
Mentionable in this connection that the Premier of the country Sheikh Hasina also expressed her deep concern regarding the river erosion of different places of the country and She also directed the concerned authorities to take urgent step for solving the problem of river erosion.
More than 200 families in several villages under Dakop Upazila in Khulna are passing their days amid fear as erosion by the river Kapotakkho has devoured large portions of the flood control dyke at several points.
The villages include Andharmanik, Khona, Khalisha, Ananda Nagar, Botbunia Bazar, Chalna Bazar, Baroikhali, Anchabhua and Sathgharia, said an official of Water Development Board (WDB) in the district.
Around 8 kilometers at Chalna Bazar is now under threat of erosion by the river Kapotakkho, said Tildanga UP chairman Gazi Zalal Uddin.
Till the decade of 80, around 150 bighas land of Aman paddy, more than 60 houses and business centers were devoured at three times erosions, he said. Erosion by the river Kapotakkho rendered around 500 families of Dakop Upazila homeless in the last two years, he added.
He also expressed deep concerned as the erosion hit people took shelter on the embankment and the erosion is going on still.
More than 200 families of different villages are facing under threat of erosion as the river was flowing just below its danger level near the embankment.
Roghunath Gyne, 50, resident of Chalna Bazar area said, we are passing sleepless night because erosion might occur at any moment.
Ashraful Islam of Batbunia Bazar area told this correspondent, I had lost my shop into the river erosion recently, now I am helpless.
“We are living in fear round the clock as erosion might devour our homesteads and even our lives,” said Mosharaf Hossain of village Khalisha.
Some People of this area have already shifted their houses in fear of river erosion, local people said.
Earlier, Mayor of Chalna Pourashobha Shanot Kumer Biswas had said that they had applied to the local government secretary asking for Tk 10 crore for protection of the Pourashabha dyke.
Sub Divisional engineer of WDB ATM Masudur Rabby and Sub Divisional Engineer Modhusudan Datta were also present during the visit of the spot of Dakop river erosion who said, proposal for protection of river erosion was sent to the authorities concerned.
