UNB, Sherpur :
Citizens and rights activists of the district on Friday condemned the rape of a garment worker by a bus driver inside his vehicle plying Nalitabari-Dhaka route on Wednesday and demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the rapist.
The victim-mother of one child-was raped by Rafiqul Islam inside his bus when it reached Mohakhali Bus Terminal in the capital early Wednesday.
The victim filed a case with Banani Police Station in the capital on Friday.
The victim said, she boarded the Dhaka-bound bus of ‘Liza-Anik Service’
from Baromari Bazar in Nalitabari upazila at around 11:30pm on Tuesday. The bus reached the Mohakhali Bus Terminal in the early hours on Wednesday.
Although all the passengers left the bus at the bus terminal, the victim was stopped by Rafiqul, saying she might fall in danger if went alone. Later, the driver forced him into the woman and violated her.
As the news reached Nalitabari, enraged people seized the bus on its return trip on Wednesday night and beat its driver and his helper. The accused driver, however, was not in the bus. He remains absconding.
Banani Police Station officer-in-charge Bhuiyan Mahbub Hasan confirmed the filing of the case.
Condemning the incident, Nalitabari Sachetan Nagarik Committee member and former teacher Zobaida Khatun said the civil society of Nalitabari will wage a strong movement if the rapist is not arrested and brought to book immediately.
