Staff Reporter :
Clearing his party’s position regarding the erection of Bangabandu’s sculpture, Maulana Mamunul Haque, newly elected Joint-Secretary General of Hifazat-e-Islami and also Secretary General of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, said that our statement was just against sculpture and not against Bangabandhu in any way.
He said, “I fully respect the great leader and architect of Bangladesh’s independence Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as a Muslim leader and pray for salvation of his departed soul. We neither oppose a late legend national leader nor even think of doing so.
He said this at a press conference in the central office of Bangladesh Khilafah Majlis on Sunday afternoon.
Maulana Mamunul Haque pointed that the peace-loving Touhidi people have been unhappy at the issue of constructing a sculpture of Bangabandhu at Dholaipar in Dhaka recently.
Scholars are protesting against the anti-Islamic culture of erecting sculptures of people or animals from an Islamic point of view. In that formula, I have also issued my statement against the construction of sculptures and statues.
But a particular group is trying to mark this opposition to the construction of sculpture as the opposition to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. My statement in this regard is unequivocal. Mamunul Haque further said, I have been prevented from holding mahfil on the basis of some wrong information for some time now. Some government organizations also are marking against me.
I think it is important to present my statement to the nation along with my political and ideological position.
You all known my family identity. My father was the late Shaykhul Hadith Allama Azizul Haque, a renowned hadith scholar of the subcontinent and a national leader of Bangladesh. He was one of the top four leaders of the four-party alliance and even the Awami League also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Khilafah Majlis in 2006 after agreeing with the five ideological points he gave.
However he denied having any plan of holding anti-state or anti-government programme by his party. He also demanded immediate release of 23 people who were arrested from a procession in Shantinagar area on November 27. Khelafat Majlish joint secretary general Maulana Ataullah Amin and Maulana Korban Ali were also present in the press conference.
