The grand rally of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) scheduled to be held today has been postponed, said a BFUJ press release. “An emergency meeting of BFUJ with its President Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul in the chair, at the Jatiya Press Club took the decision on Sunday. Fresh date will be announced later,” the release, signed by its Secretary General Omar Faruk, added.

A discussion on ‘House-Transport Rent and Holding Tax: Spiral after Independence’ organised by Natundhara Bangladesh was held at the Jatiya Press Club. In the programme held recently the speakers bitterly criticised increasing of holding tax. They urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take necessary steps to reduce holding tax. Chairman of the organisation Momin Mehedi presided over the event. The function was addressed, among others, by Senior Vice-Chairman of the organisation Shanta Farzana, Vice-Chairman Dr Noorjahan Nira, its Senior Joint Secretary General Mahmud Hasan Taher, Joint Secretary General Manir Jaman, its Cultural Affairs Secretary Altaf Hossain Raihan and its Social Welfare Secretary Sheikh Rezaul Karim.
Int’l Fund for Agricultural Dev
A delegation of International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) on Sunday began a five-day working trip to Bangladesh with planned visits to IFAD-funded projects designed to improve living standard of rural poor of the country. The delegation includes 11 members of IFAD’s Executive Board who represent the government of Angola, Brazil, China, Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Switzerland and the United States, said a press release. It will visit three IFAD-supported projects in the country and meet community members and local development practitioners to review the impact of the projects on people’s living conditions and livelihoods and discuss the challenges that they are facing. IFAD’s work in Bangladesh has contributed to gender equality and women’s social and economic empowerment by facilitating women’s access to microfinance, training and income-generating activities.
