Marking the Jail Killing Day ‘Amra Muktijoddhar Santan’ organised different programmes in front of Dhaka Central Jail (old) in the city’s Nazim Uddin Road on Friday. In the programme the speakers said the killers in August 15, 1975 killed the four national leaders inside the jail. Conspiracy is going on. So, we have to be alert against the conspirators, they added. A doa mahfil was also held for the salvation of the departed souls. Five-minute silence was also observed marking the day. The function was addressed, among others, by Presidium Member of Bangladesh Awami League Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru, Secretary General of the Coordination Committee of Jatiya Muktijoddha Shafiqul Bahar Majumder Tipu, General Secretary of the organisation Syed Ashraful Islam Nayan and Awami League leader MA Karim. President of the organisation, central committee Humayun Kabir presided over the event.
National Debate Federation
A seminar on ‘Contribution of Higher Education in National Development’ organised by National Debate Federation (NDF) was held in the conference hall of the Daily Star Bhaban in city’s Farmgate area. Eminent educationist Prof Dr Shafiq Ahmed Siddique was present as the chief guest in the programme held recently. While speaking Shafiq Ahmed suggested opening separate departments on garment industry at all universities of the country, including the Dhaka University. “Universities in the country did not take any initiative targeting the garment industry. Public or private universities are yet to open departments on the garment sector,” he added. Prof Shafiq said citizens of Sri Lanka and India work in Bangladesh’s garment sector and send their incomes to their respective countries. Referring to the need of technical education, Dr Shafiq said the government should give the highest importance to this as technically educated youth never remain unemployed. The function was also addressed, among others, by economist and Professor of BRAC University Dr Mirza Azizul Islam and Chairman of International Business Department of Quinnipiac University, USA, Prof Dr Niyamat Ilahi. Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury presented a keynote paper in the seminar while NDF Chairman Dr Tazul Islam Chowdhury delivered the welcome speech.
