Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mahajote
A rally organised by Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mahajote was held in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the city on Friday in protest against repression on Hindu people and vandalizing of statues in different parts of the country. In the programme the speakers bitterly criticized the grabbing of land of temples in different places of the country. In this regard they urged the government to take necessary steps to resist this heinous activities for the greater interest of the people of minority religious. The function was addressed, among others, by Adviser of the Hindu Mahajote Jhumur Ganguli, Senior Vice- Presidents of the organisation Dr MK Roy, Dr Sonali Das, its Vice- Presidents Fani Bhusan Mitra, Dr Shuvendu Talukder, Chief Co-ordinator Bijoy Krishna Bhattachariya, Secretary General Advocate Govinda Chandra Pramanik and its Cultural Secretary Sadhon Lal Devnath. Executive President of the mahajote Advocate Dinabandhu Roy presided over the event.
Steps Towards Development
A seminar on ‘Gender Sensitive Reporting’ organised by Steps Towards Development (STD) was held at its office in the city’s Mohammadpur. In the programme the speakers said that journalists need to be trained on gender reporting for their respective media houses, NGO and media representatives.They said the Ministry of Information along with NGOs should take up joint efforts to sensitize media persons on issues related to gender, sexuality and women empowerment in Bangladesh. Ranzan Karmaker, Executive Director of STD, said media has always been instrumental to reduce gender disparity in society and acted as a key actor to change society’s conventional perception about women who make up half of total population. He said media personnel should be provided adequate information and knowledge to produce in-depth reports on gender related issues. Nasimun Ara Minu, Chairperson of Nari Sangbadik Kendra said media has always been supportive to gender issues, but seldom have the government and NGOs looked into the capacity building issues of media persons. She said journalists covering gender, a cross-cutting agenda, should be provided enough scope and knowledge-building facilities so that they could produce thought-provoking stories.
