Bangladesh Mahila Parishad
Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) has honored 28 women for their outstanding contributions to the respective fields. Among them is filmmaker Rubaiyat Hossain known for her critically acclaimed Meherjaan . Emeritus Professor of Dhaka University Anisuzzaman handed over certificates and crests in a programme at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, marking the 46th founding anniversary of BMP. Rubaiyat Hossain could not attend the even as she was out of the country. However she has conveyed her appreciation as “I would like to express my heartiest gratitude to Mahila Parishad for giving me the award for achievement in filmmaking as a woman. Mahila Parishad is one of he oldest and most leading women’s rights organization in Bangladesh, and as I identify myself as a feminist, it is great honor and pleasure to be recognized and appreciate from Mahila Parishad. This would encourage me further to continue on my journey in filmmaking as a woman.” Recently Musée Guimet or The Guimet Museum in Paris gives a warm reception to Rubaiyat Hossain showcasing her film Under Construction. Musée Guimet honors the great discoverer of Asian cultures and every year they award Prix Emile Guimet to the director of a film which, besides its cinematic qualities, brings a remarkable cultural perspective on Asia. This year the award was given to Rubaiyat Hossain’s Under Construction at the festival international des cinémas d’Asie de Vesoul. Established in 1879, the Guimet Museum has one of the largest collections of Asian art outside Asia. Rubaiyat is now working on script development for her next film which would be a Bangladesh-France co-production, says a press release.
Assoc of Employees with Disabilities
 Aiming to ensure access to employment rights of the country’s 15 percent persons with disabilities, an organisation styled ‘Bangladesh Association of Employees with Disabilities (BAED)’ has been launched at RRTC Training Centre at Adabor in the city on Friday . Mohammad Nazrul Islam and Mohammad Masud Alam have been elected President and General Secretary respectively of 21 member committee of BAED. The office bearers have elected for a two-year term. Other office -bearers are : Vice President- Jannatul Ferdous Smrity, Treasurer- Mohammad Jahurul Islam. Five other executive committee members are : Mizanur Rahman Badsha, Mohammad Kamal Hossain, Papiya Akter, Khadiza Akter Sumi and Faisal Ahmed. BAED held a press conference at RRTC Centre on the occasion of the formation of the rights-based organisation. A good number of persons with disabilities were also present on the occasion. Speaking at the programme, BAED leaders said that most of the persons with disabilities are now leading an inhuman life due to lack of employment facilities. The organization will strive to ensure their employment and proper atmosphere for works, they said. Supported by Lenard Cheshire Disability (LCD)& Accenture, Centre for Services and Information on Disability (CSID) facilitated the launching of the first-ever organization in the country, says a press release.
Bangladesh University Grants Commission
Bangladesh University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan strongly condemned the killing of Dr. A F M Rezaul Karim Siddiqui, Professor, Department of English, Rajshahi University by some unknown killers near his home on Saturday. Through the killing of Dr Siddiqui, it is evident that a group of people with strong political links has become desperate to damage the image of the country. The law enforcing agencies should make an all out effort to immediately arrest the killers and make sure they are given exemplary punishment. The Chairman condoled the death of Dr Siddiqui, says a press release.
Bangladesh Mobile Phone Recharge Traders Assoc
Aminul Islam Bulu, President, Bangladesh Mobile Phone Recharge Traders Association in a statement to the press said, the retailers are being deprived of financial benefit in registration of mobile sims in biometric system as they only get Tk 54 to 72 for registration of 30 to 40 sim cards . They demanded increase of benefit immediately. The Association leaders sought interview of State Minister for Post and Telecommunication and BTRC chairman to discuss the matter, says a press release.
