A symposium organised by United Nations Association of Bangladesh (UNAB) will be held today at CIRDAP auditorium in the city’s Topkhana road marking the 71st anniversary of the United Nations. Additional Foreign Secretary and Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Nations Kamrul Ahsan will attend it as the chief guest while UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Ms Argentina Matavel Piccin will attend as the guest of honour. Besides, eminent historian Dr Syed Anwar Husain will present the keynote paper on the occasion. Justice Kazi Ebadul Hoque, also President of UNAB will preside over the function.
Jatiya Jubo Jote
A rally organised by Jatiya Jubo Jote, the youth wing of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) was held in front the Jatiya Press Club. Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu was present as the chief guest in the programme. While speaking Inu said that a law to prosecute patrons of militancy should be enacted to stop the recurrence of the phenomenon. Explaining the reasons for such a demand, the minister said that as long as the “production and reproduction unit” of militants continued to operate it would be impossible to stamp out militancy. Others speakers also emphasized the need for political mobilization to support and supplement the administrative steps being taken by the government. “Without political support, administrative action alone would not sufficient to destroy this trend,” the speakers said. The programme was a part of a four-month long campaign undertaken by JSD to popularize the idea of a enacting a new law that would bring the sponsors of militancy within the ambit of law. The programme started on October 13 last. The event was also addressed, among others, by the leaders of the organisation including Mir Hossain Akhter, Advocate Habibur Rahman Shawkat and Abdul Matin Miah.
Sahitya O Sangskritik Parishad
A three-day literary and cultural conference organised jointly by Sahitya O Sangskritik Parishad, Manikganj unit and Manikganj District Administration was held at Manikganj Bijoy Mela ground marking the 150th birth anniversary of Dr Dinesh Chandra Sen. Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Thursday inaugurated the conference. While speaking Muhith said Dinesh Chandra Sen collected and preserved the Bengali folk literature. The literary works of Dinesh Chandra Sen have been translated in different foreign languages that have brought international reputation for him, the minister added. The programme was also addressed, among others, by writer Syed Abul Maksud, Zila Parishad Administrator Golam Mohiuddin and Mayor of Manikganj Municipality Gazi Quamrul Huda Selim.
