A national dialogue on ‘No More Tobacco’ organised by ‘Campaign for Good Governance’ was held in CIRDAP auditorium in the city’s Topkhana Road. Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Advocate Fazle Rabbi Mia was present as the chief guest in the programme held recently.While speaking Rabbi underscored the need for finding out alternative agri-produces to stop tobacco farming. “Tobacco is a cash crop, but simultaneously it is harmful to the nation. So, before stopping cultivation of tobacco, we have to find out alternative crop for the farmers,” said Rabbi. He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has pledged to make the country drug and tobacco free by 2040. The production of tobacco is gradually falling and farmers are now cultivating maize instead of tobacco, he added. Rabbi urged farmers to cultivate corn more instead of tobacco to utilize their land and meet the local demand of foods. President of the organisation Abdul Awal presided over the event.
