A discussion on ‘Bangabandhu and nurturing of our culture in the light of independence’ organised by The Asian Journalists’ Human Rights and Cultural Foundation was held on Thursday in the VIP seminar room of Central Public Library at Shahbag with Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam as the chief guest. While speaking Quamrul alleged that a vested quarter has been utilizing BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman to spread misleading and fabricated information to raise a question mark on the glorious history of the nation. He said this against the backdrop of remarks of Tarique Rahman on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in London. Presidium member of the organisation Muhammad Abdul Khaleque presided over the discussion, also addressed, among others, by Prof Miah Md Abdul Kuddus, a teac her of Dhaka University, Krishak League vice-president MA Karim, NAP (Bhasani) president Mostaque Ahmed Bhasani and Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote general secretary Arun Sarker Rana. Quamrul said though Ziaur Rahman never claimed himself as the proclaimer of independence, Shah Azizur Rahman was the first to say Ziaur Rahman as the proclaimer of independence. “Ziaur Rahman was not a real freedom fighter but an intruder. He was the mastermind behind the August 15 carnage of 1975. Khondokar Mostaque Ahmed and Ziaur Rahman would have to face trial had they been alive during the trial of Bangabandhu Murder Case. Both of them were acquitted from the case as they were not alive then,” said Advocate Quamrul Islam, who was the state minister for law in the previous Awami League-led grand alliance government. The Food Minister said that Ziaur Rahman floated a ‘cocktail party’ in the name of BNP with all the anti-liberation forces at the prescription of Pakistani inter-services intelligence agency, ISI.
