Coalition for Local NGOs Bangladesh
A rally organized jointly by Coalition for Local NGOs Bangladesh (CLNB), an NGO working for protecting the environment and Jaljola Krishijomi Bonbhumi Protection Movement (JKBPM) was held in front of the National Press Club in the city on Friday with a call to recover 24 canals in the city from encroachers.
In the rally the speakers said that twenty four out of 46 canals in Dhaka City have been disappeared after illegal encroachment.
They called upon the government to take necessary steps to recover the captured canals and renovate the rest those are now on the verge of extinction. JKBPM leader Shahjahan Kabir presided over the function.
The speakers stressed the need for protecting the ecology for the sake of agriculture and food security in the country.
The rally was addressed, among others, by CLNB Chairman Harun-or-Rashid, leader of Bhumihin Samity, Subol Sarkar, Garib Mukti Andolon leader Shamsuzzaman Milon, Faridul Islam Farid of Teesta River Protection Struggle Committee.
