Nagorik Chhatra Oikya
Nagorik Chhatra Oikya formed a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Monday with its Convenor Nazmul Hasan in the chair. In the human chain the speakers demanded proper treatment and release of ailing Mahmudur Rahman Manna. The speakers also called upon the leaders and activists of the organisation to build up united movement to release Manna. The programme was addressed, among others, by students’ leader-Riazul Islam Riaz, President of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front-Zonardan Dutta Nantu, Convenor of Jubo Oikya-Shahinul Alam and leader of Samajik Andolon- Prof Humayun Kabir Hiru.
National Democratic Front
Leaders and activists of National Democratic Front paid tributes to Shaheed Asad by placing floral wreaths at the altar of Shaheed Asad on Monday in observance of Shaheed Asad Day. They also held a discussion on the occasion. The discussants called upon all to forge greater movement against imperialism imbued with the perception of Shaheed Asad. The discussion was addressed, among others, by organisation’s Vice-President Khalilur Rahman Khan, General Secretary Brig Gen (Retd) M Jahangir Hossain and Assistant General Secretary Prokash Dutta.
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Scientists’ Assoc
An emergency meeting of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Scientists’ Association ( BAESA) was held at the head office of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission to take decision on withdrawal of salary as per 8th national pay scale on Tuesday. Scientists working in all departments attended the meeting and they unanimously decided not to withdraw salary as per 8th national pay scale until their demands are met.
BRAC University
As part of its thrust to enhance its internationalisation programmes , BRAC University started its new year by hosting well known scholars from the University of California, Berkeley. Prof Allan Smith, a global expert on public health who has done excellent works in West Bengal and Bangladesh on Arsenic contamination of drinking water conducted an intensive workshop on “Arsenic contamination in drinking water in Bangladesh; present and future,” recently. Prof Allan Smith was hosted by BU’s s climate change center (C3ER) and the JPG School of Public Health, says a press release.

The workshop for the future in respect of the arsenic crisis was discussed rigorously at Professor Allan Smith’s workshop at which Prof Ainun Nishat and Kumar Murshid , Director Strategy and international programmes of BU also spoke. The workshop was informative and interactive and focused on new areas of research on the effects on pregnant mothers of arsenic contamination,
