A discussion on upazila polls organized by Bangabandhu Academy was held at the auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity at Segunbagicha in the city recently with its adviser Barrister Zakir Ahmed in the chair. Publicity and publication affairs secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Dr Hasan Mahmud was present as the chief guest. While addressing Hasan said the holding of fair Upazila polls with spontaneous participation of people is the success of the government and victory of democracy. “Though, BNP is now in some sort of comfortable position as far as the results in the upazila polls are concerned, it’s a victory of democracy in the real sense of the term,” he said. “The Awami League-led government could prove that all the elections were held in free, fair and neutral manner under it following the successful holding of the major part of the upazila polls,” he said hoping that the trend in holding credible polls would continue in future. Awami League assistant secretary Asaduzzaman Durjoy, Samyabadi Dal leader Haroon Chowdhury, Krishak League leader Nazir Miah and secretary general of Bangabandhu Academy Humayun Kabir Mizi were the discussants, among others. Dr Hasan Mahmud alleged that as the BNP was very scared of its defeat in the 10th parliament polls, they unleashed terror acts one after another to come to power through unconstitutional means without taking part in the polls.
