Dhaka’s Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on Sunday heard the pleas on behalf of Bakhtiar Alam Rony for his let-off in a twin murder case and fixed March 6 to pronounce its decision about Rony’s indictment.
Judge Shamsun Nahar passed the order on Sunday after hearing the submissions of the defence and the prosecution. The decision of the court has so far been deferred five times. The defence sought discharge of the accused in the case, while the prosecution pleaded for framing charges against the accused.
He is a son Pinu Khan, acting general secretary of Mohila Awami League and an MP from the reserved seats in Parliament. Rony has been accused of firing at pedestrians during a traffic snarl and for killing an auto-rickshaw driver and a rickshaw-puller in New Eskaton area of the city. However, defence counsel Nazibullah Hiru claimed it was not clear if the two
had been killed by bullets fired by Rony. “There is no specific reference in this regard in the ballistic examination report. So, the accused is innocent”, the lawyer added.
Meanwhile, Rina Akhter, daughter of auto-rickshaw driver Yakub Ali, has expressed dissatisfaction at the repeated deferring of indictment. “The judge should have handed down an order in this regard today. This is the fifth time that the charge-framing has been deferred,” she told journalists at the court area.
On February 2, the court had deferred the indictment for the fourth time due to ‘illness’ of Rony and ‘preoccupation’ of his lawyer.
The Janakantha’s auto-rickshaw driver Yakub Ali and rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim were critically injured in the indiscriminate firing from a vehicle on the night of April 13 last year. Both of them later died at a hospital.
Hakim’s mother on April 15 filed a case against some unidentified people for the murder. Detectives arrested Rony from his Elephant Road residence in Dhaka on May 31. On July 21, Sub-Inspector Dipak Kumar Das of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police submitted the charge sheet of the case and Rony has been shown as the lone accused. However, police said Rony was inebriated and lost his patience after being stuck in a traffic snarl. In a fit of rage, he fired indiscriminately from his pistol.
