Light tremor jolts Barisal region: Only Seismograph in PSTU out of order for 3 years

Reports received from different areas of southern region including Barisal city said that light tremor jolted their areas at 05:06:15 to 05:07:00 am on Monday early morning.
However, the only Seismograph in southern region installed at Patuakhali Science and Technology University ( PSTU) , has been remain out of order for the last three years and so no official record was obtained from there.
A large number of people went out on roads and open spaces feeling jolts of the ground ignoring winter cool at early morning and special prayer held at different mosques after Fazr prayer.
No causality was reported till filing this report but panic created among the general and religious minded people of the jolted areas, said Md Alauddin, Station Officer of Civil Defense and Fire Service Barisal Station after contacting with different stations of the division.
When contacted Prof. Monirul Islam of Agriculture Technology Department and In- charge of the only earth quake measuring instrument center of the southern region at Patuakhali Science and Technology University seismographic center over mobile phone, said, the center has been remain closed for last three-year. So he could not give any official statement.
We have sent a letter about repairing of the seismograph to the concerned ministry on December, 2015 also, but failed to get any response, he added.
Before a major earthquake or Tsunami, there may be some minor jolts which could aware us.
 Analyzing the facts of these small earthquakes conception of place and time of any severe earthquake can be attained, Monirul explained.
BSS from Faridpur adds: The whole district was jolted yesterday in the early morning(5.07am) by a tremor that shook the area created panic among the people.
According to local Met office sources, the tremor which started at 0507 hours lasted for at least thirty seconds.
The frightened people particularly who living in multistoried building came out in the streets.
District Administration sources told that they did not receive any report of damage or loss so far.
