One to die, 6 get life term for killing in Gazipur

A Dhaka court yesterday awarded death penalty to a man and life-term imprisonment to six others in a murder case.
Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 Judge ABM Sajedur Rahman pronounced the verdict in his crowded courtroom on Sunday.

A worker was killed and four fire fighters were injured in a devastating fire that broke out at a godown of Mega Yarn Dyeing Mills Ltd at Kashimpur in Gazipur district early Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Anwar Hossain, an operator of the factory. He was an inhabitant of Munnunagar area of Tongi.
The injured fire fighters were given primary treatment at a nearby clinic.
The fire was originated from an electric short circuit in the factory. The amount of loss couldn’t be ascertained immediately, Fire Service sources said.
Quoting the witnesses, Kaliakoir Fire Service in-charge Apurba Pal said that the fire broke out on the 3rd floor of the nine-storied factory building at Sardaganj Gobindabari at around 3:35am. It spread all over the factory rapidly. The fire fighters doused the blaze around 9:00am after fighting for about five hours.
Apurba Pal said that, at least ten fire fighting units from different stations, including Tongi and Kaliakoir, took part the fire extinguishing operation.
The factory operator, Anwar Hossain, died of suffocation in the fire, Dr Md Monir Hossain, the on duty doctor of Gazipur Sadar Hospital confirmed.
