UNB, Comilla :A court here on Sunday sentenced a man to death and five people to life term imprisonment for killing a man in 2001.The condemned convict was identified as Jahangir Alam while the lifers are Foyez Ahmed, Shamimuzzaman Babu, Emdadul Haque, Nazmul Hossain and Rafiqul Islam, all are residents of Elahabad village of Debidwar upazila.Among the lifers, Foyez Ahmed, Shamimuzzaman Babu and Rafiqul Islam were tried in absentia. The court filed the lifers Tk 50,000 each, in default, they will have to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment.According to prosecution, Anwar Hossain, a resident of Elahabad village, was killed by the convicts over land-related dispute in the village on August 10, 2001.Shahadat Hossain, son of Anwar, filed a case with Debidwar police station on the following day accusing 12 people, including Jahangir. Police submitted chargesheet against 12 people on April, 30, 2002.After examining the records and 16 witnesses, judge of additional sessions judge 4th court Chemon Ara Chowdhury handed down the verdict acquitting six other accused as their guilt could not be proved.Adv Razzakul Islam Khosru, Addl. Public Prosecutor appeared for the state while Harun-or-Rashid, an advocate of the Supreme Court, defended the accused.
