One killed in Sylhet landslide

A stone worker was killed in a landslide in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet district on Thursday afternoon.
The dead is Abdul Malik, 26, son of Abdur Rahim from Bangaon village of Islampur union under Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj, police said.
Local people said that a group of some 12 workers were illegally extracting underground stones in a risky situation digging a deep hole at a quarry on the Shah Arefin Tila, a hillock, in Companiganj.
Suddenly a huge chunk of earth fell on the workers at about 11:30am leaving Abdul Malik trapped under the earth, they said.
Companiganj police Officer-in-Charge Sajal Kumar Kanu confirmed the death and said that the victim’s body was recovered by his co-workers.
He told that they were preparing to send the body to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
A group of people were extracting underground stones violating law amid heavy rainfall when the incident took place, the police officer said adding that legal steps would be taken against the people involved in the illegal extraction works.
