One killed, 15 hurt in Sirajganj clash

Sirajganj Correspondent :A local activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed and 15 others injured in a clash between the activists of the ruling Awami League (AL) and the Jamaat-e-Islami at the Chardhuligari village in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj district on Wednesday night. The deceased has been identified as Alamgir Hossain, 35, son of Jamir Uddin from the same village.Police and locals said some Jamaat activists had an altercation with some AL men over the results of the upazila election at around 9:30pm and, at one stage, they beat up an AL man at that time.Later, the AL men gathered in the area around 10:30pm and launched an attack on the Jamaat men, triggering a clash.Both the groups equipped with home-made arms, attacked one another, leaving Alamgir critically injured who succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital, said Abdul Hai, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Belkuchi Police StationOn information, police recovered the body on Thursday morning and sent it to Sirajganj General Hospital morgue. Other injured were admitted to a local clinic.Police also detained two AL men named Rubel, 25, son of Abdur Razzak from Baorabari village, and Amir Uddin, 26, son from Habibur Rahman of Char Darghaghra village in the upazila from their houses for their alleged involvement in the clash.Protesting the death, Jamaat has called a half-day hartal in the upazila for next Sunday, Shahidul Islam, a district unit working committee member (Rokon) of the party said.
